Marcy Farrey is a storyteller who loves all things literary and independent. She is the co-founder of indieland.net, a website that documents indie culture, highlighting everything from books and music to indie boutiques and restaurants. She launched indieland with her boyfriend Crosby in April 2018. Together, they write reviews of indie businesses and art that they find inspiring and interesting.
Marcy has a Bachelor of Science in Journalism from Northwestern University’s Medill School of Journalism and a Master of Arts in Writing and Publishing from DePaul University. She began her career in the TV newsroom, where she worked as an on-air reporter and a show producer. After discovering she did not have a passion for the news, but rather for storytelling, she headed back to school and earned her graduate degree. During that time, she freelanced and interned at a number of places, working on websites and videos for startups, nonprofits, and entrepreneurs. She also began the website formerly known as litcity312.com with DePaul University Professor and Poet Chris Green, which focused on indie literary culture in Chicago. That website has now merged to become part of indieland.net.
After graduate school, Marcy entered the corporate world and worked as an internal communications manager, using her writing and video skills to speak to corporate employees. In 2017, she left the corporate world and joined Independent College Bookstore Association (ICBA) as the Director of Marketing & Communications. ICBA is non-profit association dedicated to helping independent bookstores on college campus remain independent and operationally and financially successful. Marcy believes in bringing high quality content to the right people at the right time. The former journalist in her finds it hard to be purely a saleswoman. That’s why her main objective is never to sell for the sake of selling, but rather to understand her customers and their stories. This allows her to deliver content those individual customers need to achieve their goals or improve their quality of life.
